Breckenridge, Colorado may be just the perfect mountain resort community. Unlike most modern day resorts, Breckenridge has real history, and that history hasn’t been lost. Breckenridge, or “Breck” as the locals like to call it, has arguably one of the best combinations of authentic old town charm and modern resort amenities, anywhere in the country. The town is a very decent size – it doesn’t feel big, but it definitely is a real town, not just a resort, and so provides most all the normal amenities you are accustomed to. It’s a bit unfortunate that much of the recent marketing of the resort has been geared toward the 20 something party crowd, because that does not do the area justice. Although the area’s nightlife and skiing does have great appeal to these demographics, it is probably just as well known as a great family resort, since it has features that appeal to a very diverse crowd. It’s just plain hard not to like the place!
Main Street, running down the center of Breckenridge, is a bustling hive of activity, and is replete with shops and restaurants that are packed to the rafters with people out exploring the town. One of the reasons we like Breckenridge so much is its wide variety. You can find stores that offer nicely discounted sports wear, as well as very upscale, exclusive designer wear. We have found some killer deals for apparel and ski equipment in the off seasons. You can find a local tavern with fabulous pizza and burgers at a very modest price, or you can find a superb, full service ethnic restaurant, all within a few blocks of each other.
Breckenridge has done some other things right, too. They have a trolley that runs around the city providing free transportation, and kids love the freedom – so will you! They have the Breckenridge Recreation Center, which sports a fabulous pool area complete with awesome water slide. Ask the Rec Center if there’s any Wally Ball groups that you can join if you really want a new adventure!
One of Breckenridge’s biggest strengths is the proximity of the town to the resort. One of our member properties, Main Street Station is just a few steps from the bottom of the lifts as well as even fewer steps away from shops and dining. It doesn’t get much more convenient that this.
The Breckenridge Ski Resort is a whopping 2200 acres, with 27 lifts, including two 6 person lifts and six quads. The mountain can move people! And for the more advanced skier, Breckenridge has an abundant supply of more challenging terrain – but don‘t let this scare you if you are a beginner –they have easy runs too!
As with most mountain resorts, Breckenridge has a huge selection of activities even if you are a non-skier, and whether you visit in the winter or summer, or anywhere in between. There’s excellent fly fishing in the Blue River running through the middle of town, there’s an incredible golf course with views to die for, and don’t forget the bike path that runs between Breckenridge and Frisco, or mountain biking down the mountain in summer. For water enthusiasts, Dillon Reservoir is a short distance away, and the Breckenridge/Frisco/Dillon area is one of our favorites for hiking in the fall when the aspen are shimmering their brilliant yellows and gold.
Breckenridge is located about 10 miles south of Frisco off of Interstate 70 on highway 9.
